St Oran's Chapel. Iona

Spent an enchanting day on Iona with perfect weather for walking. North Beach, and Bay of the Monks for our picnic.

St Oran's Chapel, Iona was most likely built by Somerled, the great Lord of the Isles, as a family chapel. As he died in 1162, this makes the building the oldest bit connected to the Abbey to survive. It has been the burial places of Scottish Kings for centuries, and more recently the labour leader, John Smith whose grave can be seen on the seaward side.

My sister and I lit candles and sat a while in the peace and quiet. I prefer this to the Abbey where there is always too much going on.
