Edith Cavell Norfolk Heroine.
Here's another of Norwich's fine women. I took another picture of her memorial next to the Cathedral, but that annoyed me as it's inscribed " Patriot & Martyr" and she's famously quoted as saying " Patriotism is not enough". She was a nurse during the first world war, captured by Germany in Belguim and convicted of treason for assisting 200 allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium. She was shot by a military firing squad in spite of international pressure to reprieve her. The Wikpedia entry is worth a look for details of the court case. The British Government appears to have abandoned her.
I'm off to the Outer Hebrides tomorrow so I look forward to sharing back blips on return.
