Trotter Street

Anyone who has read to children in the UK will have come across the wonderful storyteller and illustrator Shirley Hughes and will almost certainly have fallen in love with her Alfie. We read the Alfie books to pieces when our children were small then discovered her books about Trotter Street.

Unlike most children’s stories, where there are one or two key characters with all the rest as extras, in the Trotter Street series each story brings different children to the fore so you get to know and like a whole bunch of them (as well as some of their adults), all utterly believable with their own recognisable quirks.

As soon as I saw this lot at the bus stop I knew that Shirley Hughes had created them and that I had somehow been transported to Trotter Street.
