Chinese Chess
The multi-ethnic suburb of Hurstville in southern Sydney became home, like many surrounding areas, to migrants to Australia from all around the world. Greeks and Italians were followed by more European migrants, including many from the former Yugoslavia, such as Bosnians and Macedonians. But from the 1990s, the Chinese community has grown considerably, and now makes up about 50 per cent of the population; many local businesses are owned or run by people of mainland Chinese or Hong Kong background. We were in Hurstville today, and I looked in on this public square in the main street, Forest Road, where almost every day locals gather to play Chinese Chess.
