Making Gevrek
Wednesday
Today was our last day in Macedonia with Laura, and we had a quiet day, much of it spent at her home. Roger and Laura spent much of the morning trying to print off boarding passes for our Wizz Air flight tomorrow - if we didn't print them off ourselves, they would charge us extra! First problem was that Laura's laptop stopped working just before we arrived, so she had to use her host Mum's. There is no printer in the house, so they had to go out to a print place - they had to try three before they finally succeeded! Meanwhile, Jen and I were left at the house, trying to communicate with the grandad, who doesn't speak English!
This is a picture of her host Mum making Gevrek, a bread product formed into a ring and coated with sesame seeds. It is a traditional breakfast food and traditionally served with plain yogurt, which over there is of a drinking consistency and served in a glass. We got to taste them straight from the oven - Yumm! Later in the day we took a short trip to one of the local monasteries, Sveti Bogodorica Precista (Virgin Mary, Mother of God), high up on a hill top. Laura's host Mum came with us to make sure we found the right road - Laura had only been once before, back in February. The inside was simply gorgeous - all painted in beautiful colors, but unfortunately, as usual, photography is not allowed inside!
