Stoneyhurst College
One of the largest buildings in the North West. This 16thC manor house is home to a famous Catholic co-educational independent boarding and day school. Stonyhurst has provided inspiration for poets and authors who include former pupil Sir Arthur Conan Doyle whose "Baskerville Hall" was modelled on Stonyhurst Hall, and who named Sherlock Holmes' nemesis, Moriarty, after a fellow pupil. J. R. R. Tolkien wrote part of The Lord of the Rings in a classroom on the Upper Gallery during his stay at the college, where his son taught Classics.
