Tinto

Today the Dunscore Walking Group went up Tinto, a hill of 2330ft near Biggar. It's name comes from the Old Gaelic 'teinnteach', meaning 'fiery'. The hill is made of a volcanic rock called felsite which is reddish in colour and Tinto has a fiery glow in the sunset.

On top is a huge Bronze Age Cairn which is 6m high and 44m wide.

The hill is the site of a famous fell race held every November. The fastest time for the 4.4miles up and down is 29minutes and 58seconds. We did it a little slower.
