picked up big M and drove down to the borders and across to this spectacular valley where the air was sweeter than you can imagine and the bleats of the sheep wafted on the breeze. met a fine boned and passionate farmer who took us on a magical tour of a small corner of her valley as the dark clouds and sunshine tumbled in the sky. bess the dog begged to be allowed to herd the sheep and was consoled by nearly catching some suicidal rabbits.
a fruitless search for a place to eat in rural dumfriesshire at 8.30 at night lead us first to the greasiest spring roll i've ever seen, then to a damp-smelling converted cinema where we were the only customers eating curry, a pub where the locals were planning a raucous bank holiday karaoke and finally to the surprising comfort of our hotel.
