Shrewsbury School, boathouse and River Severn
Visited my cousin and her husband in Shrewsbury today and took them for lunch by way of a thank you for providing the tickets to attend the Henley Regatta in July. Ian was a rower at Shrewsbury when he was a pupil there some 60 years ago and has maintained his involvement throughout his life. He's a member of the Henley Stewards and also the prestigious Leander Club at Henley. We were very impressed and grateful for the opportunity to go to Henley and are eagerly anticipating being able to go with them next year.
We went to a very trendy café in Shrewsbury called Number Four in Butchers Row. Was ranked No 2 restaurant in Shrewsbury by Trip Advisor and it lived up to its reputation. Trendy as it was "unfinished" with bare floorboards with services on view and the kitchens cheek by jowl with the diners. Ham, egg and chips were highly recommended as was the duck, choritzo and crouton salad. I had pulled pork bun and chips, which while good made me wish I'd have had either of the other two!
After lunch the girls went shopping while Ian and I repaired to the Coach and Horses for a pint or so of Shropshire Gold and Shropshire Oracle. A real nice pub, a proper pub, with characters in front and behind the bar, good beer and ambience. Ian said he frequented the pub often in his younger days when its nickname was the "Coach and Divorces"
Spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening reminiscing about old time, looking at photographs in a book on Wellington in 1960 - just about within my memory - featuring places and people I knew. A very pleasant day.
