Christ Church, Crewe

Went out for lunch today and had a wander round afterwards.

Hadn't walked round this bit of the town centre for a long time, and I was horrified by how run-down it's getting.

You used to be able to get into the bombed-out part of this church and sit on benches inside, but now it's all fenced off, looks neglected and all the benches have gone, including the ones round the outside. I guess it's due to vandalism etc but it's such a shame. There was a sign up saying they want to close it for regular services.

Likewise gone are the seats in a little garden at the corner of the library, and the paved area surrounded by the library, police station and courts is covered in weeds. The police station has even moved its entrance off it to what used to be the rear.

The only place that looks something like is the area around the repositioned war memorial, and even that's showing signs of wear and tear and it's not that long since the relocation and the renovation of the square.

I had hoped to get a shot of the tower from inside the bombed-out section of the church, but that plan had to be abandoned for obvious reasons, so instead I took some shots from the outside. This is the best of them, I think, as it shows the ivy covering the ruined bit. The tower at one end, and a small repaired section at the other, top and tail the open section, which I think was bombed out during the war.
