Murchison Falls National Park

We left for our first game drive at 6.30am. The park was picturesque with the morning mist drifting across the grassland. Slowly the sun rose and it started to warm up. This was when we came across our first (and definitely not last) giraffe - which everyone was understandably excited about!

At the end of the morning session we had a boat ride down the Nile to Murchison Falls. This waterfall is the 'most powerful in the world', due to the Nile narrowing to only 7m wide, causing a surge of water to rush down the 43m drop. Hippos and crocodiles could be seen in abundance at the bottom of this beautiful scene.

The afternoon game drive proved a lot more productive, with giraffe, elephant and buffalo being seen in massive groups of well over 20. The guide also managed to find a lion sleeping under a bush, after a short off road drive. There were many other species spotted; warthog, heartbeast, kob, oribi, antelope and countless birds. Visitors can expect to see a good selection of animals and birds: the park contains over 70 species of mammals and 450 species of birds, over and area of 3893 sq km!

This picture shows two giraffe in the foreground, with a backdrop of Lake Albert and the Congo mountains.
