Gleaston Castle

Too much choice!

Boy we packed a lot into today.

Starting with a visit to Ulverston parish church, we then walked up Hoad Hill which has wonderful views of Ulverston and Morecambe Bay. Although it was only a 15/20 minute walk up, it was a 45 degree angle, and both Son number one and I were suitably knackered when we got to the top.

From there we took the coastal road around the Furness peninsular, stopping at the beautiful Aldingham and Urswick Churches, taking in Gleaston Castle on the way. The more observant of you might notice that the Castle is in need of a lick of paint. there are signs up saying it is too dangerous for people to take a close look, but English Heritage are apparently looking at it, and hopefully they can stop it decaying further.

We finished up spending a lovely couple of hours walking around Furness Abbey, and from there to Dalton Castle, before falling into the pub for a well deserved dinner!

Gleaston Castle is believed to have been built during the thirteenth century, and my ancestors were either involved in the planning/building of it, or lived here for a time after it was built. It was vacated at the end of the 1400s - if this wasn't good enough for them, I'd love to know where they were living!
