Okehampton Castle
We went to Okehampton Castle today, the nearest English Heritage site to home (about an hour's drive away). It's a lovely ruin of a lovely Norman motte and bailey castle - although most of the walls are medieval. At the top of the motte are great views over the town. It also has a very pleasant circular woodland-and-meadow walk, ending at a perfect picnic spot by the River West Okement.
The only negative was the audio tour (again). As well as being excessively lengthy and tedious, each section of the audio guide included some Penelope Keith soundalike pretending to be Lady de Courtenay, a past castle resident, who blethered on about how she hated the men's obsession with defensive structures when she had banquets to organise and garderobes to have installed. It was ahistorical, sexist bollocks, and English Heritage should know better.
