HIDDEN DEPTHS

Another cracking good read, Hidden Depths by Ann Cleeves, I seem to be on a really good reading run at the moment. Four characters in the story are birdwatchers, and murder is afoot. I always thought birders were a dodgy lot. It's all that lurking in the woods.

Several years ago G and I visited Blacktoft Sands bird reserve and came across two men staring into a hedge. Like you do. They said they were looking at a Rufous Cuckoo, and pointed the bird out to us. I looked it up in my bird guide and one of the men laughed. His companion was Tim Cleeves, married to Ann Cleeves, and he had co-written the bird guide. Tim took the book and drew a Rufous Cuckoo in it. I hope I never lose that book, though it is very well worn now.
