Last Day

It's officially the last day of "The Edinburgh Festival Fringe" Boo Hoo!

First show of the day was "The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe" which was a one woman show with Marilyn at the end of her, too short, life reminiscing about her life eventually going back to child hood. It was enacted with Marilyn in her bedroom telling her story (in reverse) directly to the audience, I thought the actress played her part well with her mood going up and down as she remembered the good times and bad times of her life while she quietly drank and took pills through-out the show.

The sun was out and for the first time this year I visited George Square Gardens (which Assembly use as a beer garden and location for a couple tent venues, The "famous" Spiegel Tent used to be here in the past before it moved to George Square). I didn't have much time before my next show and the beer sucks (I had a Rum & coke instead) but it was nice to relax outside and it wasn't too busy.

The second show of the day was "Freak Show", I took the above picture as I entered the tent before the show started. It was a musical dance show about a "Freak Show" with a fairly young cast of dancers and singers. The first half of the show was "front of house" and was presented as an old fashioned Freak Show, without any costumes or make-up. The second half was presented behind the curtain, back of house, in the background you heard the shows you had just seen being presented but this time you saw the real life miseries of the performers. Not very cheerful, but there was some lovely singing and dancing, it was very entertaining.

My next show was "It's Dark Outside", when I heard this show was done by the same people who did "The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer", which I saw last year, I HAD to see it and was relieved to find it was not sold out. The show is a beautiful combination of puppetry, shadow play, animation and live performance. To get an idea check out the website there's a great YouTube video trailer which will give you some idea.

The last show of the day and Fringe 2013 for me was "Fright or Flight", I had seen one of the performers do a short piece at Ali McGregors variety night and wanted to see more. It was very weird, surreal and wacky; perfect ending for The Fringe. It was a combination of dance, acrobatics, etc but there is more to it than that as the whole theme of the show revolves around the performers acting like birds, watch this YouTube video I found of their performance.

So that's it, Edinburgh Fringe 2013 is over :-(
