A Victorian Monument
On my way back from Darvel I stopped off at Newton Mearns to have a look at this water fountain which I had seen many times while going to a nearby bank. It transpires that it was erected in memory of William Mann of Whitecraigs House who funded the installation of gravitational water to local houses at the end of the nineteenth century. It was to provide water to thirsty travellers as they climbed the hill out of Glasgow. Now it is dry but is still there to remind us of Victorian philanthropy.
Scotland is full of these reminders of forgotten public benefactors.
