Diary of an Edinburgher

The Star of the County Down

I decided to make a start on clearing out the boxroom, my domain. There are shelves stacked high to the ceiling with old books, folders full of school stuff, magazines, and boxes of old software.

I climbed up to the top and lifted down a dusty wooden box with a glass front. This was inside. I had forgotten about it. My father, who was devoted to her, had gathered a few of mum’s things after she died (she didn’t have much jewelry, and none of it valuable) and made a little arrangement.

I’m afraid I just sat down and bawled my eyes out, seeing it again. My mum died 30 years ago, and I still miss her. She was born in Banbridge town in the County Down.
