Waiting for Van Gogh
Sunflowers revisited.
Yesterday I finally photographed a stranger, I had had two "misses", when my chosen subjects moved on before I got around to talking to them. But now I think this happened for a reason, as I connected with yesterday's subject rather more than I think I would have with the other two.
I went for a drink and a bite to eat with Digitaldaze and Barrioboy at a street cafe/restaurant in the Borne quarter of Barcelona. A pretty constant trickle of street musicians wandered by and stopped to play as they came to the little square where we were sitting. I thought about photographing a trumpeter who was playing when we arrived, but when he approached our table, something told me that no, he wasn't the one either (don't ask me why!) later on, and after a couple of other musicians had performed, I suddenly became aware of an accordion playing La Vie en Rose. I have a soft spot for Edith Piaff, so the player became my subject.
Her name is Flori and she is from Romania. We moved away from the table to stand under a lamplight as it was dark by then. She couldn't speak much Spanish but I told her why I wanted a pic of her but I'm not sure how much she understood. She said she didn't use internet so wouldn't be following the project. I told her that I had a friend from Romania who is a very good horseman, as many Romanians are, and she was very pleased. It seemed like this was probably the first time anyone had shown any recognition of her country and it pleased her. When we parted company she pressed my hand warmly and I felt that she had appreciated the chat more then the photo and that pleased me and made the photo more meaningful. I hope it comes out!
