Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Canada

Having completed our crossing of Baffin Bay, we moored in the sheltered harbour at Pond Inlet, tucked away behind Bylot Island at the northern tip of Baffin Island.

Before we could go ashore we needed to re-enter Canada. None of the airport style formality here. The immigration officials had flown up from Ottawa to meet us and were brought on board by Zodiac. They set up camp in the ship’s library, which conveniently had two doors. You left Greenland by entering the port-side library door, had a brief chat about your visit, got your passport stamped, and then entered Canada through the starboard library door.

Almost everything the 1800 people in Pond Inlet need arrives during the summer months by boat – this is one of the (recently unloaded, by appearance) supply boats moored in front of a Bylot Island glacier.
