Triffid?

Sunflowers seem to have self seeded in our garden this year. In spite of recent warm weather they haven't flowered yet - thought the inside of the flower head was worth a shot. Hope it flowers soon as it is being battered by strong winds today and it is cold! Has summer ended on 1 September?
