Mast Aghast

Noticed that the top half of this mast has broken off.

I suspect it happened because it had a backstay that supported the top of the mast but the forestay incorporated in the roller reefing only went half way up from the crosstrees.
(I was quite into sailing once,so explanation may be of interest to sailor types!)
