Monday is still washday, here in Dubrovnik.
Grabbed the bus into Old Dubrovnik about 9 this morning. Absolutely heaving, so god knows what it's like in high season. I dread to think!
We decided to take a wander around before comitting £20 each to a guided tour. Ten minutes after entering the “Pile” Gate we emerged from the “Ploce” Gate, and my body language probably said it all. I realised I was staring past the beautiful girls flogging glass bottom boat trips into the distance, grumpy-est of grumpy faces on, and arms firmly folded. We had just run the gauntlet of all sorts of touts desperate to part me from my money in one way or another No Thank You!
It's a shame that somewhere as beautiful and historic as this has to be spoilt by the likes of United Colours of Benneton etc., although at least there is no big yellow M, and no sign of Starbucks, yet.
So, instead of the centre of town, we spent a couple of hours clambering around the alleyways and passages of the seaward, and landward high area, where the real citizens abide. Interesting to see that Monday still is wash day here, as illustrated by today's collage. (First attempt at this. Does it work for you?)
Note to G.P. - found the hole in the wall bar, but too early for such delights – honest.
Back to the apartment for lunch / siesta. Planning a trip to the beach when the sting has gone out of the sun. Currently scorccio!
Cheers, G&S
