Vertical Sun Dial
Not often seen I believe. The dial faces perpendicular to the ground and ideally faces due south. Apparently it is thought that vertical dials cannot receive more than twelve hours of sunlight a day, no matter how many hours of daylight there are.
However those nearer the tropics which face the nearer pole may receive more sunlight around the time of the summer solstice. All sounds complicated. Google may help or perhaps there's a blipper out there who can tell all.
This dial is facing due south and I took the shot just before 1pm, which should be an hour earlier as we are on BST (1 hour ahead). So the dial is correct - I think!
I stood a little to the left to take the shot in order to show the shadow. When I looked at the dial head on the shadow couldn't be seen.
This is at Beningbrough Hall near York.
