Lathyrus Odoratus

A desperate venture ...

Had my lunch in Postman's Park near St Paul's. This tiny park is home to the George Frederick Watts's 'Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice' - a memorial to ordinary people who died while saving the lives of others and "who might otherwise be forgotten". It consists of ceramic memorial tablets which give brief details of the events. Work on the memorial started in 1900 but ceased in 1931 with only 53 of the planned 120 tiles in place. It resumed in 2009 when a new tile (Leigh Pitt, who drowned in June 2007 rescuing a boy from the canal at Thamesmead) was added. The Strange and Tomlinson tablet was made by Royal Doulton and installed in 1908.
