The Faces

Just South of the village of Armathwaite in Coombs Wood by the River Eden are some interesting carvings in the soft red sandstone cliffs. Very difficult to find and one of the Eden's well kept secrets, these carvings consist of five faces and also a salmon. Higher up the rock face is an inscription, a quotation from 'The Compleat Angler' by Izaak Walton. Nearby there is also an inscription which is much older - of Roman Origin (will find it tomorrow). The earlier mentioned faces and 'Compleat Angler' quotation are said to have been done by William Mounsey - an eccentric local scholar and traveller.

Back here tomorrow - today the light was wrong - a little too much direct sunlight which resulted in bleached areas. Perhaps a bit later on during the afternoon. The forecast is good. Pity I don't fish as there are that many trout lazing around the edge of the water just below these carvings that I am sure you could actually put your hand in and just grab one - after you have tickled it of course!
