On the first Wednesday of each month we go on the "Soup Run" to Birmingham City centre.
Early evening we meet to make a large pot of vegetable soup and fill an urn with tea. Our trusty band of volunteers are led by Martha and Francis, who keep us entertained as we work and ensure that we are ready to leave by ten to eight - the cars stacked with food - including sandwiches made by other volunteers during the day. It's always a giggle and despite being tired after a day at work, we look forward to the monthly gathering.
We travel in convoy to the back of a large carpark in the city centre. There is usually a crowd of people waiting already for us and tonight there were more people than I'd seen before. Some of these people are homeless, others living in hostels, a range of ages, colours and nationalities and all are hungry. When I first became a volunteer (almost a year ago) I was a little nervous about what we might encounter. Now I enjoy the company of these wonderful people. They are polite and openly grateful for both the food we offer and the time we have given up. It's a humbling experience.
My blip today features Marg, a friend and also a colleague. The guy in the picture joked with us and serenaded Marg - it seems he has a particular penchant for ladies in glasses!
I'm exhausted and still have work to prepare for tomorrow but I've had a ball!
