The Flicks

This is one of the last independently-owned cinemas in the UK.

For many of my childhood years it was "the flicks!"

Still owned by the Cameron family, back then "Mr Cameron" would stand at the front doors resplendent in an immaculate black dinner-suit and bow tie welcoming everyone in.

When I was about 16 I had one particularly memorable first-date here after unadvisedly suggesting the film "Dressed to Kill" (a cross-dressing slasher movie starring Michael Caine and Angie Dickinson...)

Things started badly as the opening scene featured a soft-porn fantasy sequence with Angie in the shower and got steadily worse as Michael slipped into high-heels, tights and a wig (not spoiling it for you am I?)

My lovely date must have thought she was in a scene from Taxi Driver.

Somehow the Multiplex just isn't the same.
