Australian Brush-turkey (Alectura lathami)

Also known as Scrub Turkey or Bush Turkey.
This one is next door to my daughter, and there are 3 big nests at the back of the section of land there.
I got this photo by trying to stand on the little bit of timber the runs around the bottom of the high timber fence that is between the two houses.
They are a large bird abt 65 - 70 cm. They build very large nests on the ground of leaves, sticks and earth, which are about 1 - 1.15m high by 4 m wide. The eggs are hatched inside these mounds from the warmth of the composting materials. The mound is cared for by the males, who check the temperature of the mound by putting their becks into it. To keep it a constant temperature of 33-35 deg C, they either add or remove material. They lay about 16 - 24 eggs each time, and the nests are often used the next year as well, after adding more leaves.
Tomorrow morning we are on the plane back to Blenheim.
