Granite Scupture, Milton Keynes
Today I had some time to spare in Milton Keynes before joining the train to Crewe. Being a new town it has a massive purpose-built concourse for buses , taxis, bikes and so on. Amongst all the glass, bus stances and rectangular modern buildings I suddenly was brought to a halt by a granite sculpture that was all curves. And I recognised it as the work of Edinburgh sculptor Ronald Rae. I'd photographed it in Edinburgh, before it had been bought by the town to 'humanise' the functional station square. I liked the commuter rushing past to catch his train.
The sculpture depicts a couple clinging together for comfort and was inspired by a poem by Robert Burns - 'Oh, wert thou in the cauld blast'.
