Indian Summer Festival
This is the last of the festivals for the year, & is one of my favorites! It's held along the shores of Lake Michigan--The Great Lakes have played a vital role in the lives & histories of Native Americans who have resided along their shores for millennia. Most tribal groups living in the Great Lakes region for the last 5 centuries are of the Algonquian language family. This includes such present-day Wisconsin tribes as the Potawatomi, Menominee & Ojibwe. The Oneida, who live near Green Bay, belong to the Iroquios language group & the Ho-Chunk of Wisconsin are one of the few Great Lakes tribes to speak the language of the Sioux. They all gather here to showcase their people, culture, heritage, & their love of the land and water. You can see them performing many of the dances that have been done for centuries, hear their drummers, see art work & jewelry designed by Native Artists, & go through re-creations of their native villages. It's one of the largest gatherings of Indians in North America.
