Manchester has a wealth of museums and galleries with around 2 million people a year visiting them. Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street houses the city's world class art collection. It is a wonderful example of Victorian architecture amid contemporary surroundings. Occupying three buildings, the oldest designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1824 being Grade I listed. Barry was an English architect best known for his contribution in the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament in London during the mid-19th century. The Gallery hosts a regular changing programme of diverse exhibitions, from historical to contemporary, photography, design, and decorative arts. On April 3rd 1913, Annie Briggs, Evelyn Manesta and Lillian Forrester members of the suffragette movement attacked a number of pictures as part of the militant campaign for votes for women.
