Can't decide if there is a lot of paranoid people or whether crime in this city really is as bad as people say it is. Nearly every house has an electric fence round it and subscribes to a 24hour armed response service. The fences and the adverts for security certainly create an atmosphere where you feel vulnerable. And there are certainly plenty of reports about serious crime. But I've now travelled around South Africa twice (a total of 6 weeks) and never felt intimidated or threatened.
