Banded dotterel

Just back from a terrific Nature Photography Club trip to Kaikoura, organized by gingernan (thank you!). Wonderful boat trip out to see the sea birds, a sunset that will be extremely hard to beat, great company and food, and the weather was perfect for all we did.

This little bird was sitting on three eggs, but was coming off the nest to feed on little bugs in the rocks, and was actually coming towards me rather than running away, so she was only a couple of metres away. I was lying on the stones, so I wondered what the people in the traffic thundering over the nearby bridge thought!
