The Bench

A lovely place to sit and watch and listen or read or do a crossword. We come here often. Mark has a fell run he starts and finishes here - up the River Glendamalkin, by Mungrisedale around the top of Mousethwaite Combe and back around the top of Souther Fell - which is where this bench faces.
In 1735 a ghost army was seen marching the length of Souther Fell repeatedly for an hour There were witness's to this and not one of them was drunk! A few years later it was seen again and finally in 1745. There were 26 witnesses in all. The mystery was never solved and as far as I know was never seen again. One theory is that it was some sort of mirage (Bonnie Prince Charlie's Army were manoeuvring on the Scottish side of the Solway at the time)
