Bexhill-on-Sea
I woke up to a fabulous view over my hosts' back garden when I drew back the curtains. They moved to Battle, in East Sussex, eight months ago and, despite this view, are only a couple of minutes walk away from the High Street. We sat on the terrace after breakfast, watching hay bales being mechanically collected in the field below, and were soon joined by a visiting cat who likes to hang out there day and night, nicknamed Charley Boy or Sooty. He was once returned to his owners by the vet, as he was micro-chipped, but came back again shortly afterwards, so is clearly being looked after by nearby neighbours but prefers this garden.
In the morning we had a walk around Battle, visiting the Almonry gardens and Battle Abbey and grounds, next to where the Battle of Hastings was allegedly fought, before going to the Chequers for a good lunch, and walking back along the High Street, past the Abbey Inn.
Seeing the sea became an imperative for me, so in the afternoon we drove to Bexhill-on-Sea and had a walk along the sea front, past the beach huts and sea cabbage with a view towards Hastings, and back along the top.
