I got up early today to get ready and head to church. I found out about an international Anglican church somewhere in town, so thought I would check it out today. With earphones in, I turned on some Rend Collective and had a good hour of thinking time as I changed between trains and metros on my way to church.
As soon as I arrived, I met a lovely lady who welcomed me and introduced me to some other students in church. Even though it was again something different, I enjoyed being in a Christian environment and loved meeting other students. It’s a comfort to know that wherever I go, I will always find other people with that one common thing that’s most important in their life.
After a chat with a few more people, I eventually made my way back home. To my surprise, I found out my aunt and uncle have a little guitar hidden somewhere which I could temporarily adopt to ‘cure’ my guitar-deprivation. It’s currently missing the g-string, but I re-tuned it and spent the rest of the afternoon singing and worshipping. I know that the missing string meant it didn’t sound completely right, but I didn’t care. I’ll re-string the whole guitar some other time. But I got to play, that was the important part. I’ve missed it so much. Lesson learned... I’m not leaving my guitar for this long again!
We had some Dutch family friends round for dinner. It was a good evening spent chatting, discussing, and laughing. Cultural habits and differences were being shared, which made me stop to realise that, even though Dutch by birth, by no means whatsoever do I feel Dutch at all. I felt more of a foreigner speaking my mother tongue tonight than I did speaking English or French. Crazy. It’s been an interesting day, that’s left me slightly thoughtful. Think I'll be off to ponder for a bit.
But this song has been on my mind a lot the past few days.
