These are the steps I took today using PhotoShop Elements.
I isolated the book and pencils using the lasso tool, then went to Select -  Inverse.
Filter – Adjustment – Equalize (selected area only)
Filter – Adjustment – Photo Filter
       (Dropdown Box) Deep Emerald
       Density – 86%
        Preserve Luminosity - tick box
