Cheery Strollers Help Out
One each year Lanarkshire Cancer Care helpers gather at the James Hamilton Heritage park to do a sponsored stroll around around the loch. The funds raised go towards fuel expenses for volunteer drivers who make people's lives as easy as possible by taking them for their out-patient treatment sessions. It is a really worthy cause run by wonderful volunteers.
I usually get asked along to take the pictures and do a write up.
There are so many good causes being supported by generous folk. Simultaneously there was a Catholic church sponsored walk around the loch for the Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust , a Scottish charity building and running soup kitchens and medical centres, etc for the poorest. http://www.ecuadortrust.org.uk/
I saw a Ted Talk recently that made me curious about the efficacy of foreign aid. From what I have been reading recently ('Dead Aid') big scale Live Aid style 'help' and government grants or free loans-in Africa at least- may
a) be wasteful and corrupting, and
b) do more harm than good.
Perhaps small scale help of the right sort (ask locally what people could do with to become sustainable) is the answer where every penny is accounted for.
