A Roman Holiday
Backblipping my week in Italy, 4th - 9th if anyone's interested :)
Herculaneum is the sister site to Pompeii. It's quite different to Pompeii, as it's where the rich Romans holidayed. Rather than lots of houses from varied incomes, there's more elaborate, public buildings designed for leisure and relaxation. Wandering around in the blazing August heat, I found it hard to believe that the Romans actually built saunas! Isn't it hot enough?
We thought this small room was one of the most impressive. The borders of the mosaics are decorated with shells. In the top left you can see two of the displayed faces, with very odd expressions. I'm intending to read a bit more into the meaning of this; we preferred to enjoy the site from an aesthetic point of view and use our imaginations, then read about it later whenever the mood takes us.
A very interesting day.
