"Mail Call"

It is exciting to walk to the mailbox lately and see all the letters that are arriving for my Dad's Honor Flight Mail Call. Last year I applied for my Dad, a WWII Veteran, to go on the Honor flight of West Central Florida. He is scheduled to go on October 8th. The Honor Flight provides WWII veterans free Honor tours to their memorial in Washington, D.C. I have the honor and prividege of going with him on the flight as his guardian. There are approximately 8 flights a year with 80 veterans on each flight. An entire generation answered the call to put aside their youth to save the world less than a lifetime ago when freedom and democracy were in perial. They still refuse to be call heroes. This flight will give Veterans the opportunity to see the memorial and be honored with several special things. When we arrive in DC, there will be Firetrucks, police cars, and military vehicles escorting the plane in. Once we are at the Memorial, there will be many people waiting to give them the honor they deserve. On the flight back home, there will be hundreds of people lined up to give them the welcome back that they never got so many years ago. This photo shows several of the letters that family , friends and people I don't know, have sent thanking my Dad for his sacrifice. I have received many and expect many more. All the Veterans will receive their letters during the flight home, when they will receive one final "Mail Call".

I love this quote from Will Rogers that I believe sums up what this Honor Flight is trying to do. "We can't all be heroes. Some of us get to stand on the curb and clap as they go by."

This is my contribution for "Something Written" for the September Heartfreek Challenge.

Thank you all for your warm thoughts and prayers for my Mom. She was discharged from the hospital this evening and is doing very well. She has some health issues that have to be addressed, but we are so thankful that it looks like it is not her heart!
