Heme/Onc
Today I did a rotation through Cook's hematology and oncology clinic. I wasn't originally scheduled to have this rotation but seeing that pediatric heme/onc was the whole reason for going to medical school, I had to make sure I gave it a go. An awesome classmate switched with me, I repaid him in Whoopers, lol.
Yes, indeed, the passion was still there after my day was done. Originally, I wanted to be a pediatric heme/onc physician. Today showed me that heme/onc aligns exactly with who I am; however, that said, there are other things I must consider.
Cancer is devastating, yes. But that's only the surface of it. These kids are walking messages about life. Some say, "how could you work with kids who have cancer everyday?" Again, we'd have to examine our individual philosophy on life. With me, everyone is placed on earth for a purpose. Once it's fulfilled, you are called home. These kids know more about life than the average 25 year old. They've experienced so much more if it, in a much different way of course, and have had to come to terms with things that as teenagers and adults we would come to conclude ourselves. Life is just accelerated for these special ones. They will ALWAYS teach you a message that you are too blind or selfish to see.
Next time you pity a kid with cancer, take pity on yourself. These kids are walking miracles and life reminders. The way they view the word cancer and how the general population portrays it are two different things. It's not always completely devastating.
