Hopeful Clouds

It is amazing how often one gets to see "god rays" (as I call them) from this position. I am in Neate Park, Blackheath looking out to the western sky. I have used this glorious old house and its roof across the railway line previously. It never fails to be compositionally useful on such occasions. We are desperately in need of rain around here to fend off bush fires - apart from anything else, but despite the clouds, we don't think much precipitation is really on the way. Oh well.

This sort of shot, by the way, is an example of how the inherently poor dynamic range of camera sensors can actually work in one's favour. Sometimes the god rays are not nearly so noticeable in real life as they are in a photograph.

I keep forgetting to mention that this shot is part of Square September. I am finding it quite difficult to apply square aspect ratios every day. Surprisingly so. I keep composing pictures in rectangles without thinking. I had to junk two shots that I liked rather better than this because I couldn't get them to work as squares .... all of which makes it a very good challenge.
