Sad signs of the times

This was until recently a super family butcher shop and the only one in town.
Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they would obligingly source Scottish venison or a goose or anything else special on request.
Sadly the older of the two butchers decided to retire and the task of managing the shop was too much for the remaining man and so the shop is now closed.
So all that remains is Sainsbury's - with no competition for miles, able to charge what they like and unwilling to respond to individual needs or special requests.
This is the way of high streets across the country, I guess, and if it represents "progress" then I am deeply sceptical.
We do have one remaining small family green-grocer in the town whose merchandise equals or betters the supermarket in terms of quality and sells at a fraction of their prices - with no 200% markups on cost. Let's hope that he thrives! Absence of competition generally means the consumer has little power and gets ripped off.
