Abraham Lincoln's Tomb
We stopped in Springfield, Illinois today to see the tomb of the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. The tomb is located in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, & contains not only the president's remains, but those of his wife Mary, & 3 of their 4 sons. The memorial, which is built over the tomb, is 117 feet tall & is constructed of granite. At the 4 corners of the obelisk are 4 bronze sculptures, each with a group of figures representing one of the 4 Civil War Services: infantry, artillery, cavalry, & navy. The entrance opens into a rotundra where 2 corridors lead into the burial chamber. The rotundra contains exerpts from Lincoln's most famous speeches. There is a large bronze bust of lincoln's head in front of the monument as well. If you view it in large, you'll see that his nose is all shiney! It's believed to be good luck to touch the bronze nose of Lincoln, so over the years the dark bronze finish has worn off. The memorial was dedicated in 1874.
