The Governor's House is the only surviving remnant of Calton jail, once the biggest prison in Scotland. Crowds would hang out below to watch the public executions carried out on top of the building, until 1864 when the lawmakers decreed crowds should watch jugglers and dodge folk handing out flyers instead.
Just found out the one on the left is the architect Thomas Hamilton's Obelisk to Political Martyrs who on 1793 were charged with sedition and transported to Australia for demanding legal and parliamentary reform.
