Another great woman:Barbara Hepworth
Pushing it a bit to claim Barbara for Norwich. During the 30's she and a group of artists, including Henry Moore, spent several summers near Happisburgh on the North East Norfolk coast, they were very taken with the sculptural qualities of the flint formations on the beach. There were plans to move from London to Norfolk, but war intervened and Barbara made the move instead to St Ives, where an artistic colony was assembling.
I've long been impressed by her: she had undiagnosed Triplets, already having a3yr old, so 4 under 4 ( would have finished me off ) yet she managed to experience motherhood as informing her work. There's a lovely anecdote of her discovering the garden in St ives, which lies hidden behind a high wall, after years of " carrying shopping past it" and her delight at eventualy owning it. It's now part of Tate St Ives and displays many pieces o fher work.
This work, " Atlantic " stands near Norwich Art School.
