FIGGY's Sporadic Blips

By Figgy

Carabeo beach, Nerja.

Nerja is situated on a fairly steep hill with several small beaches set in coves beneath the cliffs. It is a particularly attractive town of narrow streets many of which are pedestrianised. The town center is small with all the shops contained over a relatively small area.

The Balcón de Europa, a mirador, with stunning views across the sea, is in the centre of the old town. Its name is believed to have been coined by King Alfonso XII, who visited the area in 1885 following a disastrous earthquake. Although archive documents show that its name predated this visit local folklore says that he stood upon the site where the Balcón now stands, and said "This is the balcony of Europe". A life-sized (and much photographed) statue of the king stands by the railing on the Balcon.
