The Great Famine
This moving statue is one of several by Rowan Gillespie depicting the tragedy of the famine of 1845-8 when around a million people starved to death because of the failure of the potato crop. Additionally another 3 million left Ireland. The building across the Liffey is the Bank of Ulster andnow cos of the banking crisis young people are once again leaving their homeland.
did you know Arthur Guinness had 21 children, there are 13, 500 taxi drivers in Dublin and we went to see Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw at thr Theatre! it was excellent.
