Uncertain Emotions

Austria really does do impressive scenery and it was great to get out and see more of it today.

Still not 100% (am typing this back home on 15th and still not 100%) but ok enough to do my trip to Grossglockner. 50km, 46 hairpin bends on an utterly amazing road up into the Alps to see the highest mountain in Austria.

Clouds stopped us seeing it properly which is a shame - and why this isn't a picture taken at the top, overlooking the glacier. Despite the weather getting in the way a bit, it was an amazing trip. I got to stroke a tame marmot at a café on the way up (a 3 month old one called Moritz), saw a collection of fine old cars and bikes in the exhibition at the top and breathed in the cold, fresh, Alpine air.

The road is a feat of engineering, taking 5 years to build and opening in 1935. Some car manufacturers still use it as a test road to try out the handling of their cars. Photos don't really do the scenery justice or give a sense of the scale.

On the way back, stopped at Zell am See and by the time we dropped off at Kitzbuhel it was properly raining.
