On a rainy day in 1884 John Ritchie Findlay, the owner of The Scotsman newspaper, looked out his huge Rothesay Terrace window and grumbled to his wife about the drab view ahead.

Like all good wives she encouraged her husband to stop moaning and to go and do something about it. Fast forward a few pints later and Findlay and his architect pal Sidney Mitchell had come up with the plans for Well Court.

The Well Court clock tower building was the community hall (now architect's offices) while the surrounding flats housed working class folk from the nearby water mills.

A complete restoration means it's been surrounded by scaffolding for a couple of years but you know the work's near completion when the new washing lines are installed and everyone's back to grumbling about their clothes getting soaked.
